In 1933, Nicolau sets a turning point in his sports trajectory with his participation in the UCI Road Championships in Montlhéry, France. He becomes the first participant from the islands. His outstanding performance becomes a key asset in the European tours.

New participation in the 15th Tour of Catalonia
The 15th edition of the Tour had up to 9 stages, and it took place from 10 to 18 June. It was a Tour full of surprises, since the Italian cyclist Alfredo Bovet, who got a 45-minutes advantage between Tortosa and Reus, got the victory. Cañardo had to abandon the race due to mechanical problems.
The Italian cyclist was able to celebrate his first Tour at the Montjuïc circuit, during and edition marked by a striking international participation and with the huge support of the Government of Catalonia.
Nicolau finished among the first positions, but his bad fortune and mechanical problems stood between him and the victory.

Nicolau’s life and victories go beyond cycling and sports. His story is that of a true adventurer of the time. In turbulent times when traveling far from the island of calm was practically an odyssey, Nicolau was looking for new challenges while becoming one of the first emigrants of the Balearic cycling.
At the time, national teams only had three representatives. Accompanied by Mariano Cañardo and Antonio Escuriet, Nicolau entered in the history of cycling as the first Balearic cyclist to participate in the long-distance World Championship.

Nicolau resignation from the CC Mallorca
“C.C. Mallorca agrees to drop José Nicolau from his team”. Finally, the pop arrives at CC Mallorca, when Nicolau tries to unilaterally terminate his agreement with the club at all costs. Nicolau demands the freeing of his contract. Notwithstanding, he keeps a good relationship with some leaders of the club.
